In 1967, Hanauma Bay was claimed by the State Division of Fish and Game as a Marine Protected Area, meaning everything from marine organisms to sand, was protected. A group of volunteers began teaching visitors about coral reef conservation, providing insight on ways to help preserve the precious sea life.
