The demigod Maui imprisoned the sun here to extend the day, thus receiving the name Haleakala, Hawaiian for “house of the sun.” Haleakala is home to 103 endangered species, more than any other U.S. National Park. On the summit, sits Hawaii’s first astronomical observatory, opened in the 1960s for astrophysical research. For over 1,000 years, Native Hawaiians have protected the land surrounding the summit and crater area, making it a sacred area for Hawaiians.
