Made over a span of six years\n(1927 – 1933), they were the first integral set of the works offered on\ndisc.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\nBrahms’s First Symphony was something of a calling card for Stokowski\nthroughout his career. It featured on his debut program with the London\nSymphony Orchestra in 1912, and later that year was the main work at his\nfirst concert with the Philadelphia Orchestra. He recorded it commercially\nfive times, more than any other Brahms symphony.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\nThe 1927 performance presented here, the first electrical recording of any\nBrahms symphony, was prefaced by a spoken outline of themes by Stokowski.\nAs with his contemporaneous recording of the Beethoven Seventh (reissued on\nPristine PASC 483), Stokowski plays selected illustrations on the piano.\nProbably because the conductor tended to turn away from the microphone\nwhile still speaking in order to play his excerpts, later such recordings\nused Philadelphia assistant conductors Artur Rodziński and Sylvan Levin at\nthe keyboard.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\nStokowski had recorded the Weber \u003cem\u003eInvitation to the Dance\u003c\/em\u003e earlier\nin a cut acoustic version (PASC 192) using Weingartner’s arrangement. For\nhis first electrical recording of the work, he chose the more familiar\nBerlioz orchestration, but added to it some of his own touches such as\nhaving the solo exchanges in the opening played by the entire cello\nsection, and distributing some of the “replies” to the oboe in addition to\nBerlioz’ clarinet and flute.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\nThe two Strauss waltzes were the first recordings made in the Academy of\nMusic. They utilized a reduced ensemble of only 66 players, and abridged\nthe works to fit to a single side each, as had been the custom in the\nacoustic days. (It would not be until 1976, a year before his death, that\nStokowski would finally record a completely uncut \u003cem\u003eTales from the Vienna Woods\u003c\/em\u003e, running 15 minutes long!)\n\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\nThe final work on our program, Liszt’s Second Hungarian Rhapsody, was a\nfavorite Stokowski “lollipop” which became progressively more exaggerated\nover the years (see especially Stokowski’s filmed performance of it in \u003cem\u003eOne Hundred Men and a Girl\u003c\/em\u003e), but never lost its sense of playful\nfun. The recording heard here shows off the incredible virtuosity of the\nPhiladelphia Orchestra, truly an ensemble which had no superior at the\ntime.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\nThe sources for the transfers were pre-war Victor “Z” pressings for all\nexcept the \u003cem\u003eBlue Danube\u003c\/em\u003e, which came from a Victor “Gold” label\ncopy, and \u003cem\u003eVienna Woods\u003c\/em\u003e, which came from a vinyl test pressing.
