Around this time, various famous skaters made their mark in competition through one of the two most common skating styles of the time- freestyle and vert. Rodney Mullen, a freestyle champion, revived and perfected the kickflip, becoming one of the most notorious street skaters in skate history. Tony Hawk, son of Frank Hawk, prevailed in vert skating and became an internationally recognized, professional skater. Gathering at skateparks was a popular pastime among many Hawaiians as riding a skateboard was similar to riding a surfboard.
