Not every composer\nwas pleased with Ormandy’s attention. George Rochberg, according to our\nmutual friend Morris Goldberger, hated Ormandy, although he admired a\nmaestro of similarly conservative tastes, Lorin Maazel. I can’t imagine\nthe composers represented on this CD having any qualms about Ormandy’s\nperformances of their music. This disc represents Ormandy at his very\nbest. \u003c\/span\u003e\n\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"B\"\u003e\n\u003cspan class=\"TIMES\"\u003eI never had heard of the composer John Vincent,\nand indeed these are the only recordings available of his music. That is\na great shame, because Vincent is a richly romantic composer and a\nbeautiful craftsman. He had wonderful teachers: Frederick Converse,\nGeorge Chadwick, Walter Piston, and Nadia Boulanger. In 1946, he\nsucceeded Arnold Schoenberg as composition professor at U.C.L.A. Vincent\nwrote his \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"TIMESi\"\u003eSymphonic Poem after Descartes \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"TIMES\"\u003ein 1958, and Ormandy recorded it the following year. It is influenced by a certain symphonic poem after Nietzsche, Strauss’s \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"TIMESi\"\u003eAlso Sprach Zarathustra\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"TIMES\"\u003e.\nAs with Strauss, there is a broad orchestral canvas, alternating\nbetween contemplation and incident. Vincent reveals a passion for\nphilosophy in music that can pose questions. The work has cumulative\npower and majesty, with especially telling use of brass choirs.\nVincent’s one-movement Symphony in D comes from 1954, and Ormandy\nrecorded it in 1957. It owes something to another one-movement symphony,\nSibelius’s Seventh, of which Ormandy was a fine interpreter. Vincent\nemploys compressed thematic material, skillfully developed. His\norchestration has a romantic fullness. Subtitled “A Festival Piece,” the\nsymphony becomes joyous and celebratory, with telling use of brass\nfanfares and percussion. \u003c\/span\u003e\n\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"B\"\u003e\n\u003cspan class=\"TIMES\"\u003eNorman Dello Joio’s \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"TIMESi\"\u003eVariations, Chaconne, and Finale \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"TIMES\"\u003ewon\nthe New York Critics Circle Award in 1948. Ormandy recorded it at the\nsame session as Vincent’s symphony. The piece is a reworking of Dello\nJoio’s First Piano Sonata, a lovely short work from 1943 that has been\nbeautifully recorded by Debra Torok. The skill with which Dello Joio\nelaborates this material into a longer work for orchestra is especially\nadmirable. The opening variations are elegant and deft, and beautifully\norchestrated. They are pervaded by a feeling of melancholy daydreaming,\nalternating with agitation. The chaconne presents satisfyingly shifting\nsonorities at a stately tempo. The finale is busy and exciting, ending\nwith a vigorous brass chorale. If you are taken with this music, you\nmight enjoy another piece of Dello Joio’s from this period, his \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"TIMESi\"\u003eVariations and Capriccio \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"TIMES\"\u003efor violin and piano, which has been admirably recorded by Elmar Oliveira and Robert Koenig. \u003c\/span\u003e\n\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"Br\"\u003e\n\u003cspan class=\"TIMES\"\u003eThe Vincent works also are available on an Albany\nCD I haven’t heard, but I can’t imagine anyone not wanting Andrew Rose’s\ntransfers on this disc. The Dello Joio comes from a monaural LP and is\npresented in what Rose calls “ambient stereo.” No matter, it is one of\nthe most beautiful monaural recordings I’ve ever heard. As a test, I\nplayed the 1991 Sony CD of Ormandy’s Tchaikovsky Sixth Symphony,\nrecorded in the same locale, the Broadwood Hotel, one year after\nVincent’s symphonic poem. There is no comparison: Rose’s remasterings\nare far more musical. Now that his attention has turned to Ormandy’s\nperformances of American music, perhaps Rose will remaster Ormandy’s\nmonaural recording of the complete ballet score of Copland’s \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"TIMESi\"\u003eAppalachian Spring\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"TIMES\"\u003e.\nOrmandy gave us only the suite in stereo. Considering Rose’s success\nwith the stereo recordings of John Vincent’s music, there’s every reason\nfor him to turn to Ormandy’s accomplishments in the standard repertory\nin stereo.
