It will include many disc\npremières, including the Kodály, Griffes and Carpenter works featured in\nthe present release.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nBorn Jenő Blau in Budapest in 1899, Ormandy entered the Royal National\nHungarian Academy of Music at the age of five and studied violin there\nunder Jenő Hubay. With plans for a career as a violin soloist, Ormandy came\nto America in 1921 for a recital tour; but when arrangements fell through,\nhe found himself jobless in New York City. Securing a position in the last\nseat of the second violins in a cinema accompanying silent films, he rose\nto concertmaster status in a week, and within three years was appointed\nconductor.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nIt was while Ormandy was doing a “side job” leading an ensemble\naccompanying a dance recital at Carnegie Hall that he was spotted by\nimpresario Arthur Judson, who became his manager. Judson put him to work\nconducting on the fledgling radio network he had created (shortly to become\nCBS), and Ormandy thus became familiar to a large audience in the late\n1920s for leading light Classics on the air, and even the Dorsey Brothers’\njazz orchestra on disc.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nOrmandy’s big break occurred in 1931, when he substituted for an ailing\nArturo Toscanini in a guest engagement with the Philadelphia Orchestra. In\nthe audience was an agent for the Minneapolis Symphony, which had been\nscouting for a replacement for its recently departed music director.\nOrmandy was quickly signed to a five-year contract.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nWhen it was discovered that the musicians’ contracts did not require\nadditional payment for recording sessions, the Minneapolis Symphony\nsuddenly became the most-recorded orchestra in America. During sessions\nheld in January of 1934 and January of 1935, the orchestra made dozens of\nrecordings, including such large-scale works as the Bruckner Seventh and\nthe Mahler Second. The repertoire ranged from Bach (in transcription) to\nSchoenberg (\u003cem\u003eVerklärte Nacht\u003c\/em\u003e) to contemporary American and\nHungarian composers, along with a good helping of the light Classics with\nwhich Ormandy had been associated.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nThis volume gives a sample of the range of Ormandy’s repertoire during his\nMinneapolis years. While his Mozart here is a bit on the brusque and\nforward side, the unusually fast tempo for the second movement may have\nbeen a result of Victor’s desire to feature one movement on each side with\nno spillover. The Grainger folk-dance settings, along with the similar\nSowerby arrangement, are more in Ormandy’s wheelhouse, and it’s a pity he\nnever returned to them later in his Philadelphia recording career.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nFollowing these are recordings of works by two American composers. Charles\nTomlinson Griffes was only 35 when he died of influenza in 1920 during the\nlast major world pandemic; yet, he lived long enough to see his works\nchampioned by Stokowski in Philadelphia and Monteux in Boston. His \u003cem\u003ePleasure Dome of Kubla Khan\u003c\/em\u003e was a disc première, as was John Alden\nCarpenter’s \u003cem\u003eAdventures in a Perambulator\u003c\/em\u003e, a look at the world\nthrough the eyes of a baby in a carriage.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nThe recording of Enescu’s \u003cem\u003eRomanian Rhapsody No. 1\u003c\/em\u003e was its second\nouting on disc, although the first (George Georgescu’s 1929 version with\nthe Bucharest Philharmonic) only came out on Czech HMV and had limited\ndistribution, making Ormandy’s supercharged Minneapolis recording the one\nto first bring it to the attention of a worldwide audience. The Kodály\u003cem\u003eHáry János\u003c\/em\u003e Suite was also a disc première, as was the Weinberger \u003cem\u003eSchwanda\u003c\/em\u003e Fugue (along with the Polka, an Ormandy specialty\nthroughout his career), which bested Harty’s Columbia recording of the\nexcerpts by two months.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nThe Rachmaninov Second had previously been recorded by Sokoloff in\nCleveland (Pristine PASC 524). Both versions had cuts, as was the accepted\npractice for many years; but Ormandy’s became the \u003cem\u003ede facto\u003c\/em\u003e\nstandard for performing editions through the 1960s, until the \u003cem\u003eUrtext\u003c\/em\u003e became fashionable.
