Although he always concentrated much\nmore on performing in concert and had the feeling having to \"steal the time\nfor composing\" from his practising time, his ambitions as a composer were\nnot in the least negligible. His œuvre includes several symphonies, a\n\u003ci\u003e Violin Concerto\u003c\/i\u003e, a \u003ci\u003ePiano Concerto\u003c\/i\u003e and other orchestral works, organ and\npiano music as well as songs, several choral works (including his demanding\nsetting of \u003ci\u003ePsalm 6 for chorus and orchestra\u003c\/i\u003e, Op. 70, which he completed but\na few days before his death), but above all chamber music in a variety of\ninstrumentations. Although he valued his compositions, he rarely performed\nthem in concert himself. The occasion to hear compositions of Adolf Busch\nin concert eventually arose at the Marlboro Music School and Festival,\nwhere they have been performed regularly since the 1950s; some concerts\nhave been recorded, and some have even been included in a series of records\nreleased by the Marlboro Recording Society.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nThe \u003ci\u003eFive Preludes and Fugues for String Quartet\u003c\/i\u003e and the \u003ci\u003eDivertimento for\nThirteen Instruments\u003c\/i\u003e were both composed in the 1920s, and both works have\nbeen frequently performed at Marlboro. The \u003ci\u003eDivertimento \u003c\/i\u003ereceived its first\nperformance by members of the Dresden State Opera Orchestra conducted by\nFritz Busch, Adolf’s brother. It is one of Busch's compositions which is\nsomewhat less demanding for the listener, but requires interpretative\nprecision and sprightly inspiration. The \u003ci\u003ePreludes and Fugues for string\nquartet\u003c\/i\u003e (which were performed at Marlboro six times from 1958 through 2001)\nrelate to the influence of both J. S. Bach and Max Reger, whom Busch had\nfirst met in 1909 and with whom he gave concerts regularly from 1910 until\nReger's death in 1916.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\nThe hitherto only performance of Busch’s \u003ci\u003eClarinet Sonata\u003c\/i\u003e at Marlboro took\nplace in 1969.
